Red Sox game four: Alfredo Aceves gets the save

In 2011, the Red Sox got their first win on April 8th.  Of course, that was preceded by six loses.  This year it only took the Sox four games to get their first win. Already they’re in a better place than last season.

Bruce Allen of Boston Sports Media Watch, tweeted this yesterday morning:

Already heard a reference to “Alfredo Nosaves” this morning. Ouch.

Well he’s “Nosaves” no more, last night Aceves came into the ninth inning with a two-run lead and put the game to bed on 15 pitches to get his first save of the season and give Bobby Valentine his first win as Red Sox manager.  It wasn’t easy, the Red Sox had to come from behind in the ninth, but it was fun and it only took nine innings!

The Yankees also got their first win of the season last night which means the Sox and Yanks are still tied for last place in the American League East.  There are 158 games left for folks to obsess on; we aren’t done yet.

Tonight Daniel Bard takes the mound amidst plenty of speculation as to whether he should be starting or closing. Bard has been relatively silent, trying to stay out of the discussion, but yesterday he made it clear where he stands:

Right now I’m a starter, and I’ll try to be the best one I can be.

The last time the Red Sox won two games in a row was on August 27th when they swept the Oakland A’s in a double-header.  For better or worse, the Daniel Bard as a starter era begins tonight.
