From the moment this film came out, people told me I needed to see it. There was always a reason not to though and I figured for what I pay for cable I’d end up watching this when it hit cable. I didn’t when it came out On Demand and now that it’s on the pay channels I’ve still ignored it until today. And I only watched it today, well, really, because it was on. I didn’t expect to hate it but I also didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.
I genuinely laughed throughout most of the movie. There was very little that I didn’t find amusing and the Streep/Baldwin chemistry is amazing. After watching the trailers, I expected that I would want Baldwin and Streep to get together and surprised myself when that didn’t turn out to be the case. Steve Martin winning the woman over Alec Baldwin might seem unlikely but it totally works (even though it isn’t really the case).
A few weeks ago my sister and I were discussing films that make us “happy”. The kind of films that you leave the theater in a good mood, if not a better mood when you got there. This is one of those films. I was smiling when the movie was over. Genuinely entertained and amused for two hours – can’t ask for more than that!
