Live Blog Flashback: May 1, 2006 – Johnny and Dougie Return

Johnnydemon Okay, what the heck….going to try and live blog again.  Don’t know if I’ll be able to maintain since this game is bound to give me agita…but I’ll certainly try.

If you’ve read my live blogs before, you know the drill…I’m lazy; you’ll have to scroll down to see the latest entries and I’ll save as often as possible, but definitely at the end of each half inning.  Also, not much play by play.

You would think Bruce Springsteen was coming back to Fenway with the coverage that this is getting…and I’m not talking about Johnny Damon, I’m talking about Doug Mirabelli.  They just showed a limo outside Fenway Park and the commentators were disappointed because it was only the Governor of Massachusetts, NOT Dougie.

We don’t even know if Dougie is in Boston yet…Tek is in the lineup right now.

7:01pm – NESN has this Red Sox/Yankees montage going with the dramatic music and action shots of both the teams.  Good God this stuff is nerve-wracking.

Jerry Remy, based on being outside of Fenway with the fans, thinks the reception for Johnny "won’t be pretty".  We’ll soon see in roughly 3 minutes.

Chien-Ming Wang is pitching against Wake.  I have mixed feelings about him.  No real dislike, he doesn’t seem to be a bad kid.  But, he’s still a Yankee.  So I get a certain amount of glee when he does poorly.

This has been the longest three minutes of my life.  Sheez!

Remy says every time Johnny puts his head out of the dugout, he gets booed.

7:07pm – There is a Doug Mirabelli sighting!!!  They just showed him running out of a Massachusetts State Trooper’s car IN uniform and running into the park.

I have to say…this is very cool – and there are many, many "Welcome Back" signs for Doug.  Like I said…he’s a thunder stealer.  More people are happier about him being back than they are upset about Damon being back.

RemDawg is still in awe that Mirabelli arrived in his uniform.  This is just too funny.

7:10pm – Johnny is exiting the dugout…here’s hoping the worst the fans do is boo.

7:11pm – Sox take the field with Tim Wakefield and Doug Mirabelli.  Play ball, boys!

Wakefield already looks much more relaxed than he has any other time he’s started this season.  Let’s hope the rest of the team steps up tonight.

7:12pm – Gary Sheffield is out of the lineup.  I think I knew that…but probably forgot…

7:13pm – And here come the boos…I see some people clapping, but the boos are definitely louder than the cheers.  And Johnny tips his cap to the fans.  And I want to puke.

7:14pm – To quote Don Orsillo "They’ve changed the infamous ‘the Yankees are not very good’ to "Johnny is not very good’.  He flies out to Nixon and they boo him.

7:15pm – And there is a VERY small part of me that feels bad for Johnny.  I’m a softie.  A very small part, though.  I feel better when Jeter makes the second out.

7:19pm – Bronson is pitching against the Cardinals tonight.  Believe it or not, I still care about this.

Whoa, Giambi crushes it and Pena catches it.  Yankees go 1-2-3 and Johnny is taking centerfield.  Please don’t let any idiots do anything stupid or dangerous.

7:22pm – They threw money at Johnny Damon when he took his position.  That’s pretty funny.

7:26pm – They’re chanting something, but I can’t figure out what.  "Traitor", maybe?

7:28pm – The Big Papi just blooped a hit to Matsui…1-0!    Come on Manny, let’s get a couple more runs on board.

7:34pm – I so hate to watch them let a 3-0 pitch go by.  Come on Trot…let’s get a couple more runs on board.  (Man, it’s going to be a long night)

7:35pm – Holy cow.  3 walks.  Bases loaded for Mike Lowell with one out.  Bounce one off the wall.

7:36pm – OR you could let two pitches go by for strikes one and two.  That’s works as well.   Dam.  Bases loaded and they get the force out at home.  Hey, Cairo isn’t as bad a first basemen as people hemmed about today, huh?  Torre is jawing up the third base umpire…what’s up with that?

7:38pm – What the heck is going on….OH Small is already up in the bullpen.  Cool.

7:40pm – Wily Mo has 3 homers…1 more than Bronson.  End of my Bronson obsession for an inning or two.  Bubba Crosby, defensive specialist!  1-0 end of the first.

7:44pm – Doug Mirabelli got dressed in the trooper’s car.  SidjorgeI’m cracking up.

7:45pm – Wake just walked ARod.  I’m not laughing so much at that.

7:46pm – Baltimore is leading the Blue Jays and Wake is ahead of Matsui 0-2…I know I said I wasn’t going to play by play…but I’m hyper.  I barely know what I’m doing!

7:47pm – Wake strikes out swinging and Mirabelli makes a great catch.  I’m so glad he’s back.

My sister calls Jorge Posada "Sid the Sloth".  She isn’t here right now, but every time I see him I hear her saying it.  Sid just made the second out.

Nice inning Wake.

7:52pm – Dougie is up.  He’s one of the 25 from 2004 too, you know.  Nice standing ovation for him Fenway Faithful.  Good show!

Doug makes the first out…we still love him.

7:55pm – I’m sitting in my warm home and I’m freezing watching this game.  Man, Fenway in May is sooooo cold.

8:00pm – I haven’t eaten anything since early this afternoon.  I’m cold and I’m tired.  Gonna be a long night.  ๐Ÿ™‚

8:01pm – NICE play by Alex Cora!  Saved an extra base there.  Woo-hoo!  I hear boos, Johnny must be up.

8:03pm – WOO-HOO!!!! Doug Mirabelli throws out Crosby!  Welcome back, Dougie!

8:04pm – Wake does a little acrobatic tumble and tags out Johnny.  Nice inning, again, boys.  THIS is what a Tim Wakefield game is supposed to look like.

I’ve purchased a total of four Red Sox scratch tickets since they’ve been selling them.  I have bupkis for my troubles.  I’m just saying.

8:08pm – After a three minute discussion about his ‘bling’ in my house, Papi walks.

8:10pm – MANNY!!!!!!!!!  Love you.  That is all.  Nice hit.

8:11pm – We are now Mike Mussina bashing in my house.  It’s fun…try it.

The Sox have left, what, five men on?  I don’t like this…I don’t care that the score is still 1-0…come on guys, get on the ball.  So to speak.

8:13pm – My father says that Hazel Mae looks "hippy".  I love my father.

8:17pm – Two on, no outs and ARod is up.  I might have to take a break from my computer to get something to eat.  I’m not avoiding the game.  I’m not.  Is that number right?  ARod is hitting .267?  Where have I been??

8:24pm – Mark Loretta…what the he11 was THAT?  3-1 Yanks.  Have I mentioned what a long night it is going to be?

8:29pm – The answer to the Aflac trivia question (which I missed whilst making a peanut butter sandwich and avoiding the terrible last inning) was Graig Nettles.  Good lord, I hated him when I was a kid.

Dougie is up again.  Come on, Doug, we really need some runs dude.  Man you were thatclose Doug.

3-1 Yanks…and my stomach is starting to hurt.

8:34pm – More boos for Johnny.  And he takes a huge swing and misses…twice.

Jerry Remy:  "If he strikes out, there will be a standing ovation."

Johnny pops it up to Mike Lowell.  Two down.  Demon is 0-3.

Jeter is out too.  3-1 middle of the 5th.

8:41pm – I just cracked open a Corona.

Nice bunt single by Alex Cora!  I might need to crack open a few more beers!

8:42pm – Say it with me…."YOUUUUUUUUUUK!"

Bronface Dam.  Lead runner thrown out.  Dam.

8:45pm – Bronson has given up four hits in six innings, including a homerun.  Along with 5 strikeouts.  Reds lead the Cards 3-1.  What?  I’m not avoiding the Red Sox game.

I’m not!

8:47pm – PAPI!  Hey, bases loaded with one down and Manny up.  If you have knees, you might want to hit them now.

8:48pm – Manny knocks a run n….woo!!!!  But why did they hold Loretta?

I’m never happy, I know.

8:50pm – Trot up. Bases loaded.  One out.  Pardon me while I take a swig of Corona.

8:51pm – Nixon knocks in Loretta.  Tie score 3-3 at the end of five.

Alex Cora started this rally with a bunt base hit.  Go figure.

8:52pm – Josh Hancock walked Bronson Arroyo.  Do you get atomic wedgies from your teammates when you walk a freaking pitcher?

8:55pm – I LOVE THE SHIFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark Loretta steals a hit from Giambi!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1-2-3 inning, yet again. These stupid lottery commercials aren’t even bugging me right now.  But I still hate those Ricoh ones.

9:00pm – Blatantly stolen from"Tim Wakefield recorded his 1,500th strikeout as a Red Sox pitcher, when he fanned Bubba Crosby swinging to lead off the top of the 5th. Wakefield is third all-time in team history in strikeouts, trailing only Pedro Martinez (1,596) and Roger Clemens (2,590)."

Way to go, Wake!

Small is in for the Yankees and immediately gives up a hit to Wily Mo Pena.

9:03pm – For the record, there are no traces of my feeling bad for Johnny any longer.  Just isn’t there.  (Yes, NESN just showed some of his ‘press conference’, how can you tell…)

Dennis_farina_1 End of six and the score is still tied.

9:08pm – Who is the guy calling the games for Cincinnati?  He has a very strong (what sounds like) Chicago accent.  Sounds a lot like Dennis Farina.  I love it.  I’m drawn to bad accents, I guess.  His voice is compelling me to turn to the Reds game!

9:13pm – Don Orsillo called it a "screaming liner" off of Cairo’s bat…right to Mike Lowell’s glove.

Slight pause while we sing.  This is for KellyJ!

Katie Casey was base ball mad.
Had the fever and had it bad;
Just to root for the home town crew,
Ev’ry sou Katie blew.
On a Saturday, he young beau
Called to see if she’d like to go,
To see a show but Miss Kate said,
"No, I’ll tell you what you can do."

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don’t care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don’t win it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,
At the old ball game."

Katie Casey saw all the games,
Knew the players by their first names;
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Katie Casey knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the gang sing this song:

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don’t care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don’t win it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, your out,
At the old ball game."

9:18pm – We have a Mike Timlin sighting!  Luckily, no one is on base…plus, the Red Sox are up.

9:19pm – Nice catch by Cano.  Ew, did I just write that?

Come on, Papi.  I know you’re 2 for 2 with an RBI and a walk…we need more Papi, we need more!

Mmes Well, we aren’t going to get them that way.

9:21pm – They just showed Mike Myers warming up in the bullpen.  Funny, no one was throwing money at HIM.  ๐Ÿ™‚

9:24pm – Two out walk to Manny.  Trot is up.  Why isn’t Torre bringing in his left-handed specialist?

9:25pm – Johnny and Jeter need to communicate better.  That’s the nicest I can phrase that.  Oh yes….and bwahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9:27pm – Small just walked Lowell to load the bases with two outs and Wily Mo up at bat.  Come on, Wily.  Make me not care how well Bronson did tonight.

The wind hates us tonight.

9:31pm – Bronson just pitched his second complete game in his career.  First came when he was with Pittsburgh.  The National League loves Bronson.  He only gave up four hits and one run.  Good work, Bronson.  He is now 5-0.

9:33pm – Mike Timlin is in the game.  I adore this guy.  He’s facing Damon.  I am compelled to wish him to hit Damon on the butt…but I’ll refrain.

Johnny is 0-4 tonight.  Just thought that was worth mentioning.

9:40pm – It’s okay, Mike.  We know you’re just setting it up so Giambi can hit into a double-play.

9:42pm – Not quite the double-play I expected..but much better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whenever the camera is on Jeter he always looks like he’s avoiding it.  "Nothing to see here, looky-loos, move along!".

Brilliant bag coverage by Mr. Cora.Chew

9:45pm – Dougie is out.  I think he’s trying too hard tonight.

9:47pm – Willie Harris is pinch-running for Cora, and Tanyon Sturtze is in the ‘pen with Mike Myers.  Oh, good times ahead.

9:50pm – Good times, indeed.  Small hits Youk on the elbow.  That’s a brilliant way to avoid pitching to him, Aaron.

I just noticed that Kellia noticed Dougie doesn’t wear batting gloves.  Coco Crisp doesn’t either.  Gotta love a guy who goes against convention that way, huh?

9:55pm – MARK LORETTA!!!!!! Love that 2-0 count!!!!!!!!

Gee, I guess Robinson Cano isn’t the second coming, huh?

Thanks, Tanyon.  Good work.  4-3 Sox and a pitching change.

9:59pm – I hear no boos for Mike Myers.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Let’s go, Papi.

10:02pm – And Papi says "up yours Mr Wind!"

That lefty specialist really worked well there, didn’t he?

Papijump Papelbon caught Papi’s homerun!

7-3 Red Sox. Thank you, Joe Torre.

But REALLY thank you, Big Papi.  As Madison always says about you, you SMASHED that ball!!!

10:08pm – Top of the ninth, 7-3….Wild Thing, Mr. Papelbon, is coming in.

Man, oh man.

10:12pm – Mr. Slappy, meet Mr. Papelbon.  Now have a seat.

10:15pm – Mr. Matsui, Mr. Papelbon.  You know where to go.

10:17pm – Mr. the Sloth, yeah, you know the drill.

What a game…what a freaking game.  Great job, boys!  Now go home and rest up for tomorrow.

Mike Timlin gets another win Papelbon strikes out two, Wake pitches a great game.  Way to go Sox!

For my boys:

I’m wanna tell you a story
I’m wanna tell you about my town
I’m gonna tell you a big fat story, baby
Aww, it’s all about my town

Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the river Charles
Aw, that’s what’s happenin’ baby
That’s where you’ll find me
Along with lovers, muggers and thieves
Aw, but they’re cool people

Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston you’re my home
Oh, you’re the number one place

Frustrated women (I mean they’re frustrated)
Have to be in by twelve o’clock (oh, that’s a shame)
But I’m wishin’ and a hopin’, oh
That just once those doors weren’t locked

Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston you’re my home (oh yeah)

‘Cause I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston you’re my home (oh, yeah)

Well I love that dirty water (I love it, baby)
I love that dirty water (I love Boston)
I love that dirty water
(Have you heard about the Strangler)
I love that dirty water (I’m the man, I’m the man)
I love that dirty water (Owww!)
I love that dirty water (a come on, a come on)
I love that dirty water (come on)
I love that dirty water (I’m in love with Boston)
I love that dirty water (Aww yeah)
I love that dirty water
I love that dirty water
I love that dirty water
