Good Luck, Matt! (And another thing…)

So, the Cardinals signed Matt Clement to a one-year deal.  Good for him!

I’ve always been a supporter of Matt’s so this makes me happy even though I’m a little bummed he won’t be with the Red Sox.  He got a bit of a raw deal from the fans and the press around here.  I hope things work better for him with his new team.  Good luck in St. Louis, Matt!

The Inside Track at the Boston Herald has posted what I can use as a follow up to yesterday’s Youk rant.  Let’s see how it all gets spun, shall we?

“Unfortunately, like many common sayings, the ‘slumpbuster’ term can also be twisted to having negative connotations,” said Youk’s agent, Joe Bick of Pro Star Management, in an e-mail. “That would be incorrect in this particular case, and not something Kevin would condone or wish to be associated with. In this particular case, the term should be taken in only the traditional sports sense.” And that, he contends, is “a commonly used sports expression to describe either a player who does something to break his team’s losing streak, or changing certain routines to break a personal batting slump.”

Right.  And Roger Clemens was only taking B-12 shots in his ass.  How stupid does Mr. Bick (and Youk) think we are?  If the ‘negative connotation’ wasn’t what was meant, why the picture of the half-naked woman on the can with the tag line "Take one down"?   Why is it that EVERY baseball or sports-related blog that reported on this yesterday had the same take on the meaning of it?  Because that is what they intended and they were too stupid or arrogant to think people would be put off by it.  So, once again, women get slapped in the face and the marketing assholes and idiot athletes doing it get off with a "it isn’t what you think it is" – even though it is.   Face up to it and stop being a jerk Mr. Bick.
