Red Sox game nine: Three in a row

It wasn’t the offensive display the Red Sox put on Friday and Saturday, but Sunday brought another defeat of the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Red Sox have now won three games in a row.  The last time they accomplished that was August 23-25 against the Texas Rangers.  Red Sox fans should feel very good about their team right now.  It’s a small sample size, but they just took three consecutive games from a team that began the season sweeping the New York Yankees and who the experts said would be able to steamroll the Red Sox because of how good their starting pitching and offense are.  So much for the experts.

Today is Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts.  What this means for most folks is a day off to enjoy the Boston Marathon and an 11a.m. start time at Fenway Park.  In 2011, the Red Sox, behind Daisuke Matsuzaka’s pitching and Jed Lowrie’s 4-5 day, beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-1. The last time the Red Sox and Rays met on Patriots’ Day was in 2010 when the Rays used the game to sweep the Red Sox in a four game series, beating John Lackey 8-2.  Today, the Red Sox have an opportunity to sweep the Rays with Daniel Bard taking the mound for them this morning.

All reports point to it being unseasonably warm in Boston today. Dangerous for the marathoners but the baseball players will just think it’s August.
