Nice piece in the Herald today about how Josh Beckett pretty much did the negotiating for his new contract with the Sox himself. Curt Schilling and Mike Timlin negotiated their own contracts without the aid of an agent, and Beckett did most of it on his own, bringing in his agent at the last minute.
Beckett, essentially, took less than he could have ended up getting…as have many other players on the Red Sox. Someone tell me again how no player would ever consider taking a lesser contract just to stay in Boston.
Kason Gabbard pitched well yesterday even though he didn’t win. A horrible call, some bad defense and Julian Tavarez sealed his fate, but I feel very good about the rookies we’ve been using in these pressure pitching situations. It bodes well, not only for this season, but for the future of this team!
Jon Lester pitches in front of his family and friends today against Jarrod Washburn. I like our chances! To tide me over until 4:05pm, the Yankees are sending Sidney Ponson to the mound at 1:07pm. It’ll be my first time (unless extra innings hoses me again) seeing him pitch in pinstripes. Could be interesting.
Have a great day, folks!
