The Yankees have fallen victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is: "Never get involved in a land war in Asia." But, only slightly less well known is this: "Never pick up an overweight, violent, drunken, washed-up, starting pitcher, when the division is on the line!"
Seriously, though, nice to see the Yankees don’t mind that this guy is pretty much a POS. Love this quote from Cashman:
"We asked a lot of questions," Cashman said. "The problems he had in
the past stemmed from alcohol and that’s an adjustment he’s made in his
life. He’s dry since August."
I know that everyone deserves a second chance. I just think it’s funny that the Yankees are touting this as ‘no-risk’, when it could very well be a huge risk. And for those of you thinking I’m beating up on a guy with a drinking problem unfairly…that isn’t accurate at all. I know too well the perils of drinking and what alcoholics go through, and if Ponson is genuinely "dry", hey, good for him and more power to him. But he was ‘clean’ with the Cardinals and they designated him for assignment.
