There are many bright spots on the Red Sox, but right now the brightest for me is Mike Lowell.
Mike hit his 3rd homerun of the season tonight. Add to that, 19 doubles, 20 RBI and a stolen base. Add to THAT the many amazing defensive plays he’s made thus far…and this guy is the complete opposite of what everyone said he would be.
Mike is 32 years old, although people keep trying to make it seem like he’s older. He had a bad year offensively last year (although he won his first Gold Glove in 2005), and plenty of writers and fans wanted to write him off for this season. Well, he’s showing them so far, isn’t he?
He’s batting .336 right now, while that third baseman we didn’t get in 2004 is hitting .267. Do I think Lowell is going to out-slug ARod all season? Nah. Probably not. But right now, when Mike Lowell comes up to bat, he seems a lot more likely to do something to help the team than when ARod does.
The guy knew all the slams he was getting in the off-season and he brushed it off to come back and have a stellar beginning of the season. I’m looking forward to more doubles…and many more impressive defensive plays to come!
