Captain our Captain!

Jasonsfirstgrandslamaug42005 Jason Varitek hit his first grand slam yesterday.  Propelling the Sox to their 8th win in a row and solidifying their spot in first place!

So many non-Red Sox fans complain that Tek is a dirty player (solely based on the fact that he knows how to protect homeplate…AND his pitchers for that matter) and that he’s an egomaniac (because he wears a "C" on his jersey).  Red Sox fans know neither of these are even close to being the truth.  Jason is the most humble, soft-spoken guy on the team (okay, he might be tied with Bill Mueller in those categories) and yet he’s still the one they all look to for inspiration.

In a game where he was considered the hero by most, Jason chose to focus not on his accomplishments of the day, but on the fact that Matt Clement made his first appearance on the mound since being felled by a Carl Crawford line drive in Tampa Bay.

"Let’s talk about how much courage Matt had, to go out there and take that ball…"

I have so much respect for Jason.  He and the entire team saw Clement struggling and helped pick him up.  Once again, this team won…as a team…and their leader, although the obvious catalyst for the defense yesterday, just wanted to make sure everyone knew that.
