McCall’s Great American Recipe Card Collection – 1973

It's a bit beat up...but I love it!

It’s a bit beat up…but I love it!

So recently I found myself on eBay. Haven’t been there in a while but decided to look up something I had been wanting to buy and instead I found this recipe card set. McCall’s Great American Recipe Cards circa 1973.

I remember seeing these in someone’s house when I was much younger. I thought my mother had this set but she tells me she didn’t. So somewhere in my childhood I saw these cards and apparently coveted them without even knowing it. Now, thanks to eBay, they’re mine!

I was a little disappointed to learn that many of the recipes rely on tiny cheats. Use a boxed cake for this recipe, use packaged cookies for that one. Apparently women in 1973 were way too busy to make everything from scratch so McCall’s hooked them up with this card collection.

I’m still making my way through all the cards but I’ve decided that this weekend I’m making something from it. Most likely baking something because I’d rather not destroy a cow in the name of my epicurean whims. There’s a coconut pie that seems to be calling my name (and I hate coconut but it’ll look good!) Or maybe a mocha cake or chocolate pie.  I guess Father’s Day is as good a time as any to make a new (if a recipe from 1973 can be considered ‘new’) dessert.
