Black & White Cookies

They aren't the prettiest things but they tasted great!

Success! Well if you define ‘success’ by the cookies not looking God-awful and actually tasting so good that my 12 year-old niece who doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth keeps sneaking them…then these cookies were a success.

There’s just one little thing…they taste NOTHING like the black & white cookies (aka ‘half moons’) I got from our local bakeries as a child.  NOTHING. Like a totally different animal. A good animal, mind you, but completely different than what I was expecting.

So I’m not convinced it’s a total success. Only in that I feel like I must have done something wrong for it to come out like a tasty, soft vanilla cookie with chocolate and vanilla frosting on it. (All homemade, by the way. The cookie dough and both frostings. Only took me about an hour from prep to finish. The Ladies’ Book of Baking said it would take about 40 minutes. The extra time for me came because I didn’t have enough chocolate frosting and had to make some more. Still not sure why although it’s possible my cookies were a little larger than the ones in the book.

In any event…I actually made something from scratch that wasn’t an Italian Anise cookie and still tasted good! This goes in the win column.

This is the picture from the book. I will NEVER win presentation points, I know.
